Today’s tour starts from the World Heritage site - Potala Palace, the former winter palace of Dalai Lama. This 13-story high building contains over 1,000 rooms, various statues, stupas, murals and artifacts. The complex symbolizes Tibetan Buddhism and plays the central role of traditional administration of Tibet.
Then continue to Jokhang Temple, a spiritual center for Buddhists in Tibet. Next to the temple is Bakhor Street, filled with pilgrims and street vendors, selling traditional Tibetan items such as prayer wheels and jewelry.
In the morning, we visit Drepung monastery which was one of the “three greet” Gelug monasteries of Tibet and was founded in 1416. Ganden palace was used as Dalai Lama’s palace in the Drepung before moving to the Potala palace.
Afternoon, Sera Monastery, another important Gelug monastery of Tibet founded in 1419. The highlight is the Monks debate at around 3 - 5 in the afternoon.
After breakfast, we depart Lhasa and drive towards Everest Mountain via Gyangtse and Shigatse, two most-visited cities out of Lhasa. Heading southwest from Lhasa, this 270km very scenic highway passes the Yamdroktso, one of the three holy lakes; grassland with snow-capped mountains in the distance. We also drop visit of Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum in Gyantse city, then continue one and half hour drive to arrive Shigatse.
We spend almost 6 hours on the bus from Shigatse to Rongbuk Monastery via Lhatse where you can have lunch. Fortunately, the journey is also important as the destination with spectacular views all along the way. If weather is fine, you can catch up the Everest Mountain out of mist when passing by the 5050m Pang La Pass, one of the highest passes in Tibet.
If weather permits, enjoy sunrise view of Everest Peak at the lodging area. Later, visit the Rongbu Monastery - the unique highest monastery with nuns and monks living together. Visit the Everest Base Camp to take pictures of Mt. Everest and have a close contact with this mighty mountain. Start the journey back to Shigatse.
Wake up at the 2nd largest city in Tibet and enjoy a breakfast with local flavor. Then spend some time at Tashilunpo, monastery of Gelug Sect. It was the seat of the Panchen Lama, built in 1447. The monastery houses a giant statue of the Maitreya Buddha - the biggest gilded statue of Maitreya (Buddha of the future) in the world and a tomb of all the Panchen Lama, containing jewels and gold. In the afternoon, you will drive back to Lhasa.
Drive from Lhasa to Lake Namtso in Dunxumg county, 300 km northeast of Lhasa city. The snow-capped Nyenchen Thanglha mountain range accompany us in distance as we traverse nomads with yak and sheep grazing nearby. Namtso Lake is the "Heavenly Lake" which is one of the four holy lakes of Tibet and the highest salt-lake. You can do a very relaxing trek around lakeside and the Tashi Island.
Hot spring experience is one of the top things to do in Dunxumg. The Ancient thermal spring field covers 40 square km, with temperature at 47℃ throughout the year. On the way back to Lhasa, you can have a comfortable bath here. (Optional)
