Tibet Tours : travel to the mysterious high plateau

Located on the high plateau in western China, Tibet remains very mysterious to most people. For a long time, this territory was closed to the world due to its quite isolated location.

In Tibet you can not only see beautiful natural landscapes such as snow mountains, sacred lakes, but also visit magnificent palaces, impressive monasteries and Tibetan families. Tibetans who live and work there have their customs, language and costumes.

We have selected the most famous sites for our customers like Potala Palace, Samye Monastery, Jokhang Monastery, Sera Monastery, Ganden Monastery, Mount Everest, Kalais, Namtso Lake, Yandrok Yumtso Lake and Palcho Monastery.

We have some popular private tours and group travel itineraries in Tibet. If you want to customize it, don't hesitate to contact us.

How to Plan Tibet Tours

Due to its high altitude, cold weather and depopulated zones, independent travel in Tibet is not allowed. Here are things to know when planning a Tibet Tour.

Tibet Travel Permit?

For overseas travelers, a Tibet Travel Permit is required at entry (flight or train) of Tibet. The permit is issued by Tibet Travel Bureau and we will do the application on behalf for our confirmed customers. Needed documents include copies of valid passport (at least 6 months validity), China visa, confirmed Tibet travel itinerary, entry and departure flight/train. Generally, it takes 10-15 working days to issue the permit and takes more days if encountered public holidays. It is advisable to start the planning at least one month prior to enter Tibet or earlier if taking trains.

When do you want to travel?

Due to its high altitude, Tibet is very cold in winter. The route to Everest Mountain is closed at snowy days. The best period is from May to October. However, the hotel cost is higher in the peak season and there is always a high demand for train and flight tickets.

What kind of accommodation do you prefer?

For a short visit, your stay in Tibet limited to the capital city, Lhasa. You can find some very good hotels with distinct Tibetan decoration. When you extend your tour from Lhasa to Gyangtze, Shigatse, and onto Mount Everest, the accommodation facilities are going to be basic level.

How to get to Tibet?

There are direct flights from domestic big cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Chongqing, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Xining and a small but nearby city of Shangrila. Flight schedule and rate can be found on China-based platforms like ETripChina. International flight is only available from Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. We also partner with travel agency in Nepal and provide extension tours to and from there.

The impressive Qinghai-Tibet train route connect Lhasa with the other parts of China via Xining and Lanzhou. Few cities offer direct trains including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chongqing and Chengdu. However, the direct train ride takes over 40 hours. We would suggest taking bullet train or flight to Lanzhou/Xining and experiencing the best parts of the train routes upwards to Lhasa.

Road journey is also favored by some adventure groups, but it is only suitable for experienced outdoor lovers.

Other things to know?

Our Tibetan people have their own distinct customs and traditions. Travel responsibly to respect their religious and customs. For example, do not wear hats in a monastery, do not touch Buddha statues and do not set foot on the doorstep of a door etc. Our experienced guide reminds you of these tips on the spot.
