Xian City Wall is the most complete and largest fortification that left in China. The wall stretches 13.7 kilometers (8.5 miles) in length and encircles the old city. Now it is still considered as a landmark of Xian and a must-see attraction for all being to the city.

The structure of the wall is extremely strong and firm lasting for centuries without large-scale renovation. Its unique architectural style is also a wonder. A moat is built around the wall to protect the inner city. 98 Ramparts are set every 120 meters on the wall to allow soldiers to protect the entire wall without exposing themselves to the enemy. The wall has 18 gates which are the only way to go into and out of the city. Each gate stands a main tower and a narrow tower which connected by tunnel in between. Among all, the South Gate (Yongning Gate) is the most time-honored and magnificent. Now not all the gates are open to the visitors. Visitors can ascend the City Wall via gates in each direction.

Xian City Wall History

The wall has come into existence in Tang Dynasty (618 -907) and was enhanced in the 14th century under the regime of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang who established the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). After the enlargement, the wall now stands 12 meters (40 feet) tall, 12-14 meters (40-46 feet) wide at the top and 15-18 meters (50-60 feet) thick at the bottom. In the most recent restoration in 1983, a circular City Wall Park has been built along the wall. Besides, a deep moat, trees and flowers are added to decorate the architecture.

For the energetic, another interesting experience is cycling on the City Wall to explore part of it or circle the wall. The rental fee is about RMB 40 per 1.5 hours per bicycle. A deposit of RMB 200 is required.
