Dunhuang is an ideal base for exploring Northwest China. With convenient high-speed rail, several destinations can be easily visited as short extensions.

Jiayuguan (Gansu) – High-speed rail: ~2-2.5 hrs
Known as the "First Pass Under Heaven,"  this is the western end of the Ming Great Wall. Visit Jiayuguan Fortress and return to Dunhuang the same day.

Zhangye (Gansu) – High-speed rail: ~3.5-4 hrs
Famous for the Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye Danxia National Geopark. Best enjoyed as a relaxed 2-day, 1-night trip.

Hami (Xinjiang) – High-speed rail: ~2.5 hrs
An oasis city known for Uyghur culture, the Huiwang Tomb, and sweet Hami melons. Recommended 2 days / 1 night.

Turpan (Xinjiang) – Bullet train: ~4 hrs (transfer required)
Explore Jiaohe Ancient City, Karez irrigation system, Flaming Mountains, and Grape Valley. At least 2 days / 1 night is essential.

Classic Dunhuang Itinerary Ideas

Dunhuang's main attractions are relatively concentrated, with the city area and the Western Route as the two key zones.

Day 1 – Arrival & Desert Discovery
Arrive in Dunhuang. In the afternoon, visit Mingsha Mountain & Crescent Spring. Ride a camel across the dunes, enjoy the desert sunset, and explore Shazhou Night Market in the evening.

Day 2 – Cultural Highlights
Visit the Mogao Caves (advance reservation required). In the evening, watch the immersive performance "Legend of Dunhuang".
Optional additions if time allows: Dunhuang Museum or Dunhuang Bookstore.

Day 3 – Gobi Adventure
Take a private car tour along the Western Route, visiting Yangguan Pass, Yumen Pass, and the Yadan (Devil City) Landforms, ending the day by chasing a dramatic sunset in the Gobi Desert.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Dunhuang is from May to June and September to October, when the weather is comfortable and the desert landscape is at its most beautiful. Summer offers long daylight hours ideal for sunrise and sunset experiences, while winter is quiet and uncrowded, perfect for travelers seeking a more exclusive visit.

Dunhuang is easily reached by air via Dunhuang Mogao International Airport, with regular flights from major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Lanzhou, and Urumqi, plus occasional seasonal charters. High-speed and regular trains also connect Dunhuang with key northwest hubs, offering a comfortable and cost-effective travel option. Most major sights are accessed by private transfer or chauffeured car.

Dunhuang Local Cuisine

Dunhuang's cuisine reflects its Silk Road heritage. Signature dishes include yellow noodles with donkey meat, a variety of lamb specialties, and the refreshing apricot peel drink, well suited to the dry climate. Evening visits to Shazhou Night Market offer a relaxed way to sample local flavors.
