Taoxichuan Creative Market, Jingdezhen: The Young Pulse of a Thousand-Year Porcelain City

If Jingdezhen is the "heart of Chinese porcelain,"  then Taoxichuan Creative District is its youngest and most energetic heartbeat. Rather than a quiet museum, Taoxichuan is a lively, open-air art community reborn from former ceramic factory sites. It blends industrial heritage with bold contemporary creativity, making it a pilgrimage site for ceramic lovers worldwide and an ideal place for international visitors to experience China's modern youth culture.

The Soul of Taoxichuan: Its Market Scene

Taoxichuan's spirit comes alive through its vibrant market ecosystem, which offers two main types of experiences:

Key Highlights & Must-Do Experiences

Walk Through Living Industrial History
Stroll through the district and you'll see 22 preserved factory buildings, tall chimneys, and original kilns. Once old porcelain factories, these red-brick structures now house galleries, museums, studios, and boutiques. The contrast between old and new is striking - and perfect for photography.

Shop One-of-a-Kind Original Ceramics
Whether at regular markets or special festivals, the real charm is meeting the creators themselves. You'll find everything from classic blue-and-white porcelain to modern minimalist and playful designs. Many vendors are the designers, happy to share the stories behind their work.

Enjoy Immersive Art & Cultural Events (especially during themed markets)

  • International vibe: Major events like the Spring & Autumn Grand Market have brought together nearly 1,000 artisans and artists from over 50 countries.

  • More than shopping: Expect open-air concerts, experimental dance and theater, shadow puppetry, artist talks, and lively parades that turn the whole district into a cultural festival.

Create Your Own Ceramic Piece
Join a hands-on workshop for wheel-throwing or hand-painting. For around RMB 150–200, you'll make your own piece with guidance from a local artist. It's fired and shipped to your home - a meaningful and personal travel souvenir.

Practical Tips for Visitors

Check updates in advance:
Follow official Taoxichuan channels to confirm market dates, festival schedules, and daily programs.

Shopping & communication:

  • Prices reflect original design (small items from tens to hundreds of RMB; fine pieces can be higher). Polite bargaining is okay but limited.

  • Mobile payments (WeChat Pay / Alipay) are widely accepted. Many vendors offer domestic and international shipping-ask before buying.

  • Basic English is common among young vendors; a translation app helps.

Comfortable walking shoes are essential. If joining a pottery workshop, wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
