Must-Try Local Delicacies

Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles: One of Yunnan's signature dishes. Ingredients are added in sequence to a steaming bowl of chicken broth, combining both flavor and ceremony.

Wild Mushroom Hotpot (summer only): June to October is mushroom season. Enjoy a rich, savory hotpot with a variety of fresh wild mushrooms - this is a highlight of a summer visit to Kunming. The Kunming Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism publishes an official list of top "Wild Mushroom Delicacy Restaurants."

Snacks & Local Flavors: Explore  farmers' markets and old streets for specialties like tofu rice noodles, Guandu rice cakes, grilled rice blocks, and flower cakes.

Best Time to Visit Kunming

The best time to visit Kunming is March to May and October to November, when the weather is warm, dry, and comfortable. Spring brings flowers, while autumn offers clear skies and pleasant temperatures - ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Sunshine can be strong in spring, and mornings and evenings are cooler in autumn.

Summer (June to September) is cooler than most Chinese cities, with average temperatures around 21°C (70°F). It is also the rainy season, especially in July and August, and the best time to enjoy Yunnan's wild mushrooms. Bring rain gear and eat wild mushrooms only at licensed restaurants.

Winter (December to February) is dry and sunny with mild daytime temperatures. It's a popular time to escape the cold and see Siberian red-billed gulls, though nights can be chilly - bring a jacket and moisturizer.

Spring City Highlights – 4 Days

Day 1: Arrive in Kunming. In the afternoon, stroll around Green Lake Park, visit Guandu Ancient Town for a taste of history, and explore Kunming Old Street in the evening.

Day 2: Morning visit to Dounan Flower Market. Walk along the Haigeng Dam by Dianchi Lake to watch seagulls. In the afternoon, explore Yunnan Ethnic Villages, then take the cable car up to Dragon Gate (Longmen) on Western Hills for panoramic views.

Day 3: Visit the Stone Forest Scenic Area, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. In the evening,  depart Kunming or continue on to Dali.

Days 4–6:

• In spring or autumn, take a day trip to Dongchuan Red Land,  a paradise for photographers.
