The Yungang Grottoes, the first royal-authorized caves in China, were initiated during the Northern Wei period and continued for approximately 150 years, encompassing the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui, Tang dynasties, and more. With 45 main caves, 252 niches of varying sizes, and over 59,000 stone sculptures, it stands as a treasure trove within the realm of Chinese cave art. When compared to numerous other cave temples in China, the Yungang Grottoes stand out for their prominent Western influence, showcasing a distinctive and vibrant Hu style.

Useful Tips:

1. People aged 60 and above (including 60y) and children aged 6 and below (including 6y), or those with a height of 1.2 meters and below, enjoy free admission.

2. Guide Service is available from Visitor Service Center, southern section of the lobby on F1.

3. Located on the north side of the first floor of the Visitor Service Center, offering self-service storage and rental options for wheelchairs, umbrellas, strollers, and pet carts.

4. Sightseeing bus(with extra cost) is possible from Buddha Light Avenue(佛光大道) to No.1 Grottoes(第一窟).

5. There’re also shuttle tourist buses connecting from Datong downtown to Yungang Grottoes/Hanging Temple/Datong Ancient City. The bus schedules may be adjusted at any time from bus company, so please refer to the map for accurate information.
