The Hanging Temple in Shanxi is a remarkable architectural marvel that defies gravity by clinging to the sheer cliffs of Mount Hengshan. This ancient temple complex is renowned for its unique location, where it appears to be suspended in mid-air, showcasing a blend of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian elements in its design and structure.
The Hanging Temple was originally constructed in the later period of the Northern Wei Dynasty (491 AD), making it over 1,500 years old to date. The Hanging Temple is a nationally protected cultural heritage site and is regarded as the "Number One Scenic Spot" among the Eighteen Views of Mount Hengshan. In 2010, it was selected as one of the ten most endangered architectural wonders in the world by Time Magazine.
