Getting to and from Yuanyang

Yuanyang is accessible mainly by road from southern Yunnan, with several convenient options:

Long-Distance Bus (Recommended 2025 Update): A new clean-energy tourist bus line connects key hubs like Mengzi, Jianshui, Gejiu, and Kunming directly to Hani towns near the Yuanyang Rice Terraces. No transfers in the county are needed, making it the most convenient option. From Kunming, some routes may require a transfer at Jianshui or Gejiu; foreign passport holders currently need to buy tickets on-site.

Plane + Bus: Fly into Kunming Changshui International Airport, take an airport shuttle to Kunming East or South Bus Station, then a bus to Jianshui or Gejiu, and finally transfer to a bus to Yuanyang (Xinjie Town).

Best Time to Visit Yuanyang

Peak Season (Highly Recommended): November to April, especially January–March. During this time, terraces are harvested and filled with water, reflecting the sky like thousands of mirrors. Sunrise and sunset create stunning light-and-shadow effects, ideal for photography.

Other Seasons: May–October sees lush green or golden terraces as rice grows. Summer is rainy, and cloud or fog may obscure views.
