Jiujiang Travel Guide

Jiujiang is a historic river city in northern Jiangxi where mountains, lakes, philosophy, and poetry converge. Anchored by Mount Lushan, a UNESCO World Cultural Landscape, and Poyang Lake, China’s largest freshwater lake, Jiujiang offers a rare blend of dramatic nature and deep cultural heritage. From the Confucian legacy of Bailudong Academy to the Buddhist roots of Donglin Temple, and from legendary Tang-dynasty poetry to migratory bird spectacles, Jiujiang is an ideal destination for travelers seeking meaning beyond scenery.

Top Attractions & Experiences in Jiujiang

Mount Lushan is the city's soul. Rising above the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, it is a UNESCO World Cultural Landscape shaped as much by human thought as by geology. Over 16,000 poems and hundreds of cliff inscriptions were left here by scholars and poets. Watching sunrise at Hanpukou, hiking to Sandiequan Waterfall, or strolling through Guling Town's historic villas, visitors experience the meeting of natural grandeur and cultural memory.

At the mountain's foot spreads Poyang Lake, China's largest freshwater lake and a landscape in constant change. In summer it feels vast and ocean-like; in winter it becomes Asia's most important wintering ground for migratory birds. At Wucheng, flocks fill the sky, while at Hukou, the Yangtze River meets the lake in the striking "two-color waters" phenomenon.

Jiujiang's intellectual and spiritual traditions are equally deep. Bailudong Academy, regarded as the foremost academy of ancient China, was a center of Confucian learning led by Zhu Xi, influencing education across East Asia. Nearby, Donglin Temple, birthplace of Pure Land Buddhism, offers a quiet, timeless atmosphere that resonates far beyond religious boundaries.

The story ends by the water. Along the Xunyang River, poetry flows with history. This is where Bai Juyi wrote The Song of the Pipa. Today, a riverside walk and the evening light-and-music show "Dream of Xunyang: Pipa Pavilion" bring those verses back to life.
