Jianshui: A Timeless Cultural City in Southern Yunnan

Jianshui is not just an ancient town - it is a 1,000-year-old historic city with a rich cultural soul. Located in southern Yunnan's Honghe Prefecture, this former capital, once known as Lin'an, was the political and cultural center of the region and earned the nickname "the Confucian heart of southern Yunnan."

Today, Jianshui attracts travelers with its well-preserved ancient city, the famous Jianshui purple pottery craft, and a relaxed lifestyle that invites you to slow down. Wander Ming- and Qing-dynasty streets, join a hands-on pottery experience, explore Confucian traditions, and enjoy a simple bowl of local rice noodles by an old well - just like the locals do. Jianshui is a place to experience history, culture, and everyday life at an unhurried pace.

Top Things to See & Do in Jianshui

Exploring Jianshui is best done through four themes: history, purple pottery, heritage railways, and natural wonders.

Jianshui Confucius Temple

Known as China's second-largest Confucian temple (after Qufu). Join immersive experiences such as traditional Confucian ceremonies, wearing historical robes and reciting classics to feel the spirit of ancient scholarship.

Zhu Family Garden
A grand Qing-dynasty residential complex, often called the "Grand Garden of Southern Yunnan." Interactive programs and courtyard performances bring the stories of merchant families to life.

Chaoyang Gate
The iconic east gate of Jianshui Ancient City, nicknamed the "Little Tiananmen." Climb the tower for panoramic city views; the square below is a lively local gathering spot.

 Purple Pottery & Arts

Ant Workshop / Beishan Pottery Village / Zitao Street
Striking art spaces designed by local artist Luo Xu, where modern architecture meets traditional craftsmanship—great for photos.

Wanyao Village
The birthplace of Jianshui purple pottery. Visit national-level heritage workshops and try hands-on activities like wheel throwing and carving.

Jianshui Ancient Train (Narrow-Gauge Railway)

Highly recommended. Ride a vintage train from the old town to Xianghui Bridge, Shuanglong Bridge, and Tuanshan Village. At sunset, Shuanglong Bridge's 17 arches reflect golden light, creating a magical scene.

 Swallow Cave

One of Asia's largest limestone caves, famous for millions of swifts nesting here in spring and summer, and for dramatic traditional nest-harvesting performances.
