Dazu: Home to Dazu Rock Carvings
Dazu District is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, on the half-way of Chongqing-Chengdu route. It is part of the one-hour economic circle of Chongqing. The city’s most famous site is Dazu Rock Carvings. It is a collection of more than 50,000 statues and over 100,000 Chinese characters carved into the cliff faces between the 9th and 13th centuries. The carvings of the Thousand-Hand Bodhisattva, the Reclining Buddha, and the Laughing Buddha, are very impressive and showcases their high level of artistic skill. Dazu Rock Carvings have been listed as a "World Cultural Heritage" by the United Nations and this has made Dazu a must-visit place for both Chinese and foreign tourists to Sichuan and Chongqing.
